In
the upcoming days another meeting of the OAS will be
held in Chile. Although it is certain that the idea
behind this summit is to solve the urgent problems facing
the American Continent, nonetheless, one can’t
help but wonder what concrete results each one of these
encounters have yielded.
One gets the impression that the dignified OAS delegates
arrive with well prepared and thoroughly rehearsed speeches
in which the Populist factor plays a vital and key role
in generating applause. But, after three or four days
of pretty words, indulging in the comfort of Five-Star
hotels, with exquisite dinners, vintage wines, fine
champagnes, and garbed in elegant Italian suits,...NOTHING
HAPPENS!!!
Fidel
Castro the oldest dictator in the world, Aristide the
tyrant of Haiti, the uncontrollable Chavez from Venezuela;
the guerrillas and the drug lords of Colombia, smiles
mockingly while their people’s condition worsens
and the level of poverty in our region increases.
Let’s
not forget however, that all these meetings take place
with taxpayers’ money from all the countries of
the hemisphere; so we humbly suggest that an effort
is made to reach specific and measurable conclusions
in each one of these encounters. In other words, a list
of findings should be drawn at the end of each session,
and specific duties and responsibilities assigned to
named individuals for the implementation of necessary
actions aimed at positive and clear cut changes with
genuine results. At the beginning of the next summit,
it would be good to define the progress and achievements
that have been made and assess the results in order
to justify the costs of all these meetings.
We
know that after 25 OAS missions to mediate the Haitian
situation, the Aristide Government has yet to comply
with the terms of resolutions 806 and 822, they were
lots of meetings, much self congratulating and Back
slapping, but…NOTHING HAPPENED!!!
The
OAS has a wealth of information on all the abuses perpetrated
by the illegitimate government of the dictator Jean
Bertrand Aristide (following the fraudulent elections
of May and December 2000), including the bold assassination
of journalists, the intimidation of press workers, drug
trafficking, corruption and mismanagement of public
funds; yet we do not see real steps taken to free the
Haitian people from their bondage.
The
International Press, the OAS itself, Reporters without
Borders and the European Union have clearly, openly
and specifically denounced and condemned these crimes
against the Haitian people, and still NOTHING HAPPENS,…only
BLA, BLA, BLA!!!
The
Delegates attending the upcoming meeting of June 2003
in Chile, should not miss the opportunity to work for
a solid and positive outcome in the face of world public
opinion, and should bear in mind and specially not forget
that for each humble Haitian who cannot even eat once
a day, living on less than a dollar per day, and surviving
the famous recesflation (recession and inflation), you
are:
The
last hope…. So please Act Accordingly!!!
